Raj Devarajan grew up in India with a clear vision for his future. At an age when many students were still considering career paths, he had already entered Madras Medical College at fifteen years old. That early beginning reflected a determination that would continue throughout his professional life.

Training Across Three of America's Best Universities

After graduating from medical school, Raj moved to the United States to continue his education. He completed residencies in adult psychiatry at Yale University, child psychiatry at Harvard University, and internal medicine/gastroenterology at Tufts University.

By the conclusion of his fellowship at Tufts in 1994, he had trained at three of the nation’s leading institutions. This experience provided him with a broad understanding of medicine and helped him recognize the important relationship between mental and physical health.

Thirty Years of Practice, One Procedure at a Time

Raj Devarajan, MD, founded Middlesex Gastroenterology, PC in 1994. During the following 29 years, he built one of the busiest gastroenterology practices in Massachusetts. When he retired from clinical medicine in 2023, he had performed more than sixty thousand endoscopic procedures.

Earlier in his career, Raj established the ERCP program at Emerson Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center. This specialized procedure is used to address conditions affecting the bile ducts and pancreas. Developing the program required both clinical expertise and the ability to implement a new initiative within a hospital system.

Throughout his career, he worked closely with Emerson Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, and Yale New Haven Medical Center. At each institution, he earned respect as a physician committed to patient care and professional excellence.

Building Institutions, Not Just a Practice

In 2005, Raj founded ASC Middlesex Endoscopy Center, LLC, to provide patients with efficient treatment options outside the hospital setting. He served as the facility's President until 2023. The center reflected his belief that healthcare services could often be improved through innovation and practical solutions.

Raj's leadership extended beyond his own organization. He served as President of the Medical Staff at Emerson Hospital from 2015-2017 and as a Board member from 2015-2019. He also served as Past President of the Massachusetts Gastroenterology Association and the American Association of Gastroenterologists of Indian Origin, contributing to the development of the specialty at both state and national levels.

In addition to his medical career, he founded several companies in other industries, demonstrating a broader interest in business and entrepreneurship.

Industry Recognitions and Accomplishments

Raj has served as a speaker for Salix Pharmaceuticals, Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Forest Pharmaceuticals, and AstraZeneca. He has also worked as a consultant for Boston Scientific and Pentax Corporation.

He served on the Medical Advisory Boards of Cristcot Corporation and Allurion Corporation.

Raj's efforts in public education included television appearances in which he discussed common gastrointestinal diseases in a clear, understandable manner. Through these programs, he helped make medical information more accessible to the public.

Among his accomplishments, he holds a share of a patent for an HCA drug formulation that has been tested worldwide and is currently awaiting FDA approval. If approved, the drug could become a valuable addition to existing treatment options.

Life Beyond Medicine

Outside of medicine, Raj maintains a variety of interests, including golf, tennis, chess, bridge, and skiing. These activities have provided enjoyment and balance throughout a demanding career.

As the father of two adult children, Raj considers raising a family one of the most rewarding parts of his life. He also strongly supports charitable causes and helps others whenever possible.

One of his notable contributions was supporting a school in India. He also volunteers at the Acton Food Pantry, where he assists with local community needs and remains actively involved in service efforts.

A Career Built on Depth and Expertise

Today, Raj Devarajan serves as Global Medical Monitor at Cristcot. In this role, he applies decades of clinical experience and regulatory knowledge to the evaluation and advancement of drug development programs.

The position allows him to contribute to healthcare more broadly while drawing on the expertise he has gained throughout his years in clinical practice. Although his career has evolved, he continues to be guided by the same commitment to understanding challenges thoroughly and responding with thoughtful action.
